Raising School Standards through Compelling Learning Experiences
|
It was full house for Mick Waters, Director Curriculum, Qualification and Curriculum Authority, England as he delivered the second Jack Gibson Memorial Lecture on 18 October at the British Council, Delhi .
Two hundred head teachers, teachers, educationists and former students of the legendary Jack Gibson got together to remember and honor the memory of a man who not only taught them but inspired. Among the audience were Major General BS Grewal Deputy Commandant, National Defence Academy and Mr Pramod Sharma, Principal, Mayo College Ajmer, the two institutions with which Jack Gibson was intimately associated and they spoke eloquently of his contributions.
Mick added magic to the nostalgic evening in the theatre with his presentation that demonstrated to the audience what constitutes a compelling learning experience through video clips, photographs and well-researched ideas on the curriculum for the learners of the 21 st century. He shared his vision of schools that would develop students with the skills required for success in the corporate world while nurturing young minds to be caring, discerning and upright citizens.
As Mick mentioned in his talk entitled Raising School Standards through Compelling Learning Experiences. Jack Gibson was larger than life; he seized each day, enjoyed a challenge, appreciated the simpler things, held demanding standards, knew all the pupils and believed in the potential of education. That made him an educator with a legacy of learning. He reiterated that we need in our schools today people who push back the boundaries; go beyond the limits, support and care for others, achieve perfection, are brilliant but unpredictable, appeal to some but upset others and have big ideas. In other words we need more Jack Gibson.
