BAE SYSTEMS' PARTNERSHIP WITH UKIERI
B

AE Systems has a long history of commitment to

education at all levels and recognises the importance of investing in the education and skills of young people. In the UK it has an extensive education programme which includes a school road show (which involved 13,000 young people in 2006), online curriculum support for teachers and young people and work experience opportunities. It was because of this

commitment to education that it was keen to be involved in the UK-India Education and Research Initiative and to build on its existing presence in India. Their involvement as a Corporate Champion is across three strands namely Higher Education, Schools and Professional & Technical Skills strand. BAE Systems is providing Hawk Trainer aircraft to the Indian Air force and the contract is being delivered in partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd which is based in Bangalore. Hence all India links for BAE Systems have a focus on Bangalore. Richard Hamer, Education Partnerships Director, BAE, has been a very proactive and interactive advocate of the UKIERI-BAE partnership and has contributed extensively to BAE's participation within the Initiative's core strands, events and activities

BAE’S  PARTICIPATION  IN THE HE  STRAND
A t HE level, BAE Systems has partnerships with

more than 40 colleges and universities in the UK to build engineering research capabilities and improve graduate recruitment. We are delighted to report that the Research Award supported by them in UKIERI Research Awards 2006, 'Towards Reliable and Smart Air Vehicles', fielded jointly by University of Leicester and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, was awarded a Major Award. They have formed a steering group to support and monitor this project, lead by Professor John Murphy, Head of University Partnerships, John Wright, Robert Johnston and Professor Ian Postlethwaite of Leicester University

BAE'S ENGAGEMENT WITH
UKIERI SCHOOL CLUSTERS

B

AE Systems has been concerned about the falling number of students choosing to study engineering and technology courses.

To help address this, they run a worldwide education programme aimed at encouraging young people throughout their academic careers to take an interest in Science & Technology. Within UKIERI, BAE sponsors the Yorkshire - Bangalore cluster which has science and engineering as one of its focus areas. A lead secondary school and its feeder primary schools from Brough, near Hull, where BAE has a major site, have been identified to link up with schools in Bangalore

 TOWARDS RELIABLE AND
 SMART AIR VEHICLES-
 MAJOR AWARD
T he research objectives will involve the

development of new methods and techniques for the design of robust, reconfigurable control systems for UAVs, especially light-weight UAVs, fault-tolerant, reconfigurable control systems for micro-satellites, coordinated control strategies for multiple UAVs, optimal software and hardware for light-weight UAVs, smart structures for airborne actuators and sensors, and PIO suppression compensators. In addition, the project has two overarching aims which are:

• To establish a cluster of expertise and activity in India in the area of Aerospace Control.

• To develop a long lasting sustainable partnership between the Leicester Control Systems Research Group, Aerospace Engineering at IISc and the cluster partners.

“BAE Systems invests heavily in educational initiatives, which promote science and engineering to students of all ages, from primary schools through to our universities. The UK-India Initiative is an excellent opportunity for us to share our experience in giving students a better understanding of science and engineering, and in helping to strengthen education links between the two countries”
