communities in which people not only understand the value that science brings to their lives, but also believe that learning about science is rewarding in its own right.

GSK is one of the four Corporate Champions of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative. In addition to cash support (of £ 250,000) GSK has committed to invest up to £250,000 per annum directly in the graduate chemist trainee programme, through which they offer fully funded work placements, to young Indian chemistry post-graduate students, to spend a year in the UK in either their Research and Development or Global Manufacturing Departments. This significant contribution to the PTS strand of UKIERI adds to the Initiative's key objectives, which is to bring about a step change in the UK-India education and research relationship

G

laxoSmithKline supports a range of educational

programmes with the aim of developing an understanding of science issues in everyday life and inspiring young people to take up careers in science. This is part of their broad commitment to social investment that focuses on healthcare and education. Through its science education programmes, GSK works with students, teachers, government bodies and other partners to cultivate

L

ast year, 10 bright young chemists, from leading

Indian universities, arrived in London on a cold November morning, to a warm reception by the GSK Team, to begin placements at their facilities in Stevenage, Harlow and Dartford. The students get an opportunity to be key members of a multi-disciplinary project team, discovering and developing tomorrow's medicines, dedicated to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. They receive the highest quality training in all aspects of their chosen career in Research and Development and

Manufacturing in science, technology and personal development.

The current batch of students is working on significant projects in areas like asthma and schizophrenia. They enjoy the collaborative environment, the quality of chemistry and its application to identify new medicines, the sense of achievement it gives them and the 'international' environment' at GSK. Needless to say, the sights and sounds of beautiful English cities like London are also being savoured immensely!

 UKIERI-GSK WORK PLACEMENT PROGRAMME
F

or this programme, a special secretariat has been set up in New Delhi, to engage up to 50 Indian Centres of excellence in Higher

Education. These include the eminent Indian Institutes of Technology and the Regional Colleges of Engineering, besides several leading Indian universities from all parts of the country. The process of contacting the institutions begins at the beginning of the year, followed by promoting the programme through specially designed collateral, database management, and finally the initial screening, evaluation and short-listing of applicants takes place. UKIERI Science expertise is provided by Dr Guru Gujral, Head of Science & Technology, British Council. This intensive exercise is undertaken with constant coordination with Harry Kelly and Carolyn Mason of Team GSK, leading to the final interviews in the summer in India at the British Council, where applicants come from far and wide, sometimes having travelled more than 30 hours! The selected applicants are then guided through the process of filling out the contracts, and providing credentials information. They are also given travel advice and assistance with passports, visas and finding accommodation before traveling to the UK.

Now in its second year, the UKIERI-GSK programme has received an excellent quality and quantity of applications, and is gaining in popularity with each passing year (178, as compared to 64 in the first year. The GSK team responded very positively, by making an offer to 15 students this year, a fifty per cent increase over last year
