UKIERI STRAND UPDATE
HIGHER EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
A large part of the funding under the initiative is allocated to the Higher Education strand. The principal activities under this strand include promoting research partnerships between centres of excellence, developing joint and dual course delivery and encouraging doctorate and post-doctorate collaboration through research fellowships and PhD scholarships. The strand has done well over the last two years with the announcement of 6 Major Research Awards (of up to ₤500,000 each), 61 Standard Research Awards (of up to ₤150,000 each), 20 PhD Scholarships, 43 Research Fellowships and 20 Collaborative Programme Delivery  (CPD)
Awards. The Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has now endorsed the strand as funding and operational partners.

RESEARCH AWARDS
The India-UK research awards have managed to greatly increase the horizon of the knowledge partnership between India and the UK, spanning a great range of subjects. In this respect, UKIERI has recently signed an MoU on India-UK Higher Education (HE) Leadership Development Programme. The aim of this programme is to develop higher education leadership in India and the UK by forming working partnerships between HE leaders.

COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMME
DELIVERY AWARDS
This is another key activity under the Higher Education strand of UKIERI. Funding under CPD is available to the UK and Indian institutions to facilitate the development and delivery of UK degrees and professional qualifications in India through institutional partnerships

SCHOOL CLUSTER PARTNERSHIPS
UKIERI School strand was launched to create a life-long relationship between young people in the UK and India and to assist them in fulfilling their requirement of living and operating in a global economy. This strand has facilitated partnerships between 24 clusters of schools in India and the UK reaching out to over 250 schools. Six school clusters are sponsored by Shell, BP, GSK and BAE Systems. The corporate sponsors are actively involved with the clusters they sponsored and have added

an interesting dimension to the partnership. The programme has been successful in reaching out to the government-funded schools as there are currently 42 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), 6 state-funded schools from West Bengal, 6 Kendriya Vidyalayas and 12 Atomic Energy Central Schools, which have been actively engaged in transacting the joint curriculum projects between them and their partner clusters in the UK alongside
private schools.
In addition to this, the school programme has also supported head teachers to explore ways of enhancing the teaching and learning experiences through Leadership Development Seminars and ICT Workshops.
UKIERI SUPPORTS INNOVATIVE TEACHING TECHNIQUES
Teachers being directed for the
Action Teacher Video
The UKIERI School Programme has been piloting an exciting new programme called the Action Teacher Video. Under the programme, schools are invited to submit a proposal for a short seven-minute video film on a creative and innovative teaching technique that they would like to explore with their students. Selected schools are provided with inputs from a professional film production company. Once the film is ready, Teachers TV then arranges for filming a discussion that reviews the impact and scope of the pedagogical
technique employed by the teachers. The discussion and the video film are then brought together in a 15-minute programme that is broadcasted on Teachers TV and is made available as a downloadable resource for professional development on the Teachers TV website. In all, eight videos have been filmed so far of which four were in the UK and four in India. These will be available for viewing in November. For instance:
A.
The Springdales School, Pusa Road of the Shell School Cluster has been using the Carbon Foot Printing tools extensively for the past year. As a result of this, they discovered that the Computer Lab was emanating the maximum amount of pollution in their school and since have actually revamped the lab to make it more eco-friendly.
B.
Keeping with the UKIERI theme of Science and Technology, the St Paul's School of the Shell School Cluster made an Action Teacher Video on students' initiative to extract citronella oil and reuse proprietary brand mosquito repellant dispensers. The video recorded the teacher's effort to encourage scientific exploration in the class room.
C.
The Brough Primary School of the BAE Systems School Cluster explored students' reaction to images collected by their teacher Joanne Gilbert, during her visit to India and explored ways in which different communities live together
PROFESSIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS
This strand aims to create a step change in vocational education by facilitating partnerships between the Indian and UK colleges of further education and Indian vocational colleges. The colleges are encouraged to work together on joint educational projects with an objective to meet industry skills gaps in two strategically important areas for India and the UK financial services and creative industries. The major activities under this strand include development of joint projects, student and staff exchanges and work placements. Funding under the strand is available for up to three years. The strand aims to support a total of eight partnerships by the year 2011, most of which are already in place. To help ensure that the skills system meets the needs of individuals and employers, Professional and Technical Skills (PTS) partnerships are encouraged to have a strategic engagement
with industry and business employers, sector skills councils, further education colleges and universities.
CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP

CREATIVE INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS
The partnership between Pearl Academy of Fashion, Delhi and Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, UK, focuses on increasing knowledge and skills in the supply chain that links India and UK's fashion industries. The main aspects of this project are strengthening collaborative knowledge and understanding of the global context of fashion design, management and manufacturing, and help to meet identified employer needs to increase development opportunities for students progression.
The partnership between South Delhi Polytechnic for Women, New Delhi and Blackburn College, UK, aims at developing a long-term collaboration to identify and address the training needs of the textile and fashion sectors in both countries. The partner institutions have already agreed to develop an International Design qualification and have also organised an International Design Competition
