UKIERI-Shell School Cluster Event

Dr Van der Eijk, Chief Technology Officer, Shell and Ms Usha Soni, Extra Mural Research Manager, Shell Technology India visited Laxman Public School of the UKIERI-Shell School Cluster to witness the outcome of the UKIERI Schools Strand collaborations and Shell's engagement with the cluster.

The six schools of the Shell-UKIERI School Cluster presented a multi-dimensional programme on the themes of 'Renewable Energy' and 'Save the Planet' which is one of the key areas of their collaborative project with their partner schools in Bristol. The programme included brief speeches by the young students, a play on the 'Chipko' greening movement in India and an extraordinary exhibition of posters and projects done by the students as a part of the UKIERI exchange project. A tree planting ceremony by Dr Eijk was also organised as a symbol of respect for the guest and an environmentally proactive gesture.

The staff and students also escorted the visiting dignitaries through a poster display on 'Glimpses of UK History' from the Stonehenge Age to the Celtic Invasion to the onset of the Industrial Revolution. It exemplified an enhanced understanding of each other's cultures, histories, geographies and education systems, which is indeed the overarching objective of the UKIERI Schools Strand. Dr Eijk said that he was "moved and impressed by the impact UKIERI is making through its School Cluster Programme."

UKIERI-GSK partnership was also invited to share best practices at the 'Innovation Event' organised by the British Council at its London offices. GlaxoSmithKline contributes to UKIERI by providing work placement opportunities to bright young scientists, tapped from 50 leading institutions from all parts of India.

Dr Harry Kelly, Chemistry Operations Officer, Medicinal Chemistry, GlaxoSmithKline, in his presentation described the UKIERI-GSK partnership as a successful one, which meets GlaxoSmithKline's objectives of globalisation and its strategic intent to access talent from different parts of the world towards excellence in research.
