The Higher Education strand has done well over the last three years with the announcement of 6 major research awards (of up to ₤500,000 each), 97 standard research awards (of up to ₤150,000 each), 20 PhD scholarships and 43 research fellowships.
The India-UK research awards have managed to greatly increase the depth and breadth of the knowledge partnership between India and UK spanning a great range of subjects. These new partnerships ensure that Indian and UK education systems are strengthened and become increasingly global in outlook, enabling both countries to better succeed in a global knowledge economy. The Indian Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has now endorsed the strand as funding and operational partners since 2007.
UKIERI also signed an MoU on India-UK Higher Education (HE) Leadership Development Programme. The aim of this programme has been to develop higher education leadership in India and the UK by forming working partnerships between HE leaders. These partnerships aim to contribute to the development and dissemination of best practice in HE management and leadership in Indian and UK HE institutions.
By 2011, the following minimum targets will have been met:
- 50 new collaborative research projects, including 5 ‘major’ projects linking centres of excellence
- 40 new UK award programmes delivered collaboratively in India with 2,000 Indian students enrolled
- 300 additional Indian research students, postdoctoral researchers and staff will have worked in the UK
- 200 UK researchers worked in India and 200 UK undergraduate students supported for studies in India
- 2000 Indian research students completed research degrees in the UK through collaborative delivery
