Cluster Schools Partnership
The cluster school partnerships programme of UKIERI has been a catalyst in expanding understanding of school systems in both India and the UK and establishing long-term learning partnerships between both the countries. Engaging with international partners has equipped school principals, head teachers, faculty members, administrators and students for life in a global society and work in a global economy.
UKIERI is the first school programme where a good balance between the clusters of 127 state-funded to 148 private schools has been reached in India. In the first year 11 clusters were supported through the programme while in the second year 13 clusters of schools embarked on a journey of learning and evolving together. In the third year a further 13 cluster partnerships were formed, and all of these partnerships have been supported by UKIERI in their joint curriculum projects for three years.
Of the total of 37 clusters of schools, 4 clusters in the first year and 2 clusters in the second year have been sponsored by Shell, BP, GSK and BAE. The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas located in remote rural areas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, the Atomic Energy Central schools, government schools of Delhi, Sikkim and West Bengal have also benefited immeasurably through the programme. Exchange of ideas and teachers with schools in India and the UK was an enriching experience for both staff and students alike. Across the last three years investment was largely focussed in Delhi state, followed by Karnataka, Punjab, West Bengal and Jharkhand in India and in London, the South west and North West in the UK.
UKIERI has also supported the head teachers through Leadership Development Seminars and ICT workshops conducted for nominated representatives of participating schools.
Most of the partnerships formed have been focusing on priority subject areas like Science and technology, Environmental studies, Arts & Creative industries, Sports, Languages and Entrepreneurship.
The partnerships formed under the initiative had some key underlying principles:
| • | Making learning fun |
| • | Engaging with technology |
| • | Create professional teaching resources |
| • | Sharing learning resources |
| • | Connecting with the outside world |
| • | Bringing the world into your classroom |
| • | Appreciating different learning and teaching styles |
| • | Leadership for learning |
